Flipside Radio Lady Lea Lady Lea podcast@flipsidemanagement.co.za yes Episode 23 - Ricardo da Costa KCS Resident Mix 1 Episode 23 - Ricardo da Costa Ricardo da Costa knows a thing or two about what makes a dancefloor tick—master of the addictive morphing bassline and a pounding kick drum, his fusion of electro, tribal and tech house has marked him as one of the most significant DJs to emerge from an already illustrious era of innovators. He is one of the most prominent and accomplished figures in South African dance music— his credentials read like every DJ’s daydream but, above anything else, what shines through is the fact that Ricardo da Costa has tirelessly followed his passion for dance music and it is this potent passion that permeates all his endeavours.

A true musical maverick, Ricardo da Costa succeeds at whichever role he decides to take on– the constant element being dance music. Director of South Africa’s most wellrespected dance label by day (Soul Candi Music) and a highly sought-after DJ by night, Ricardo’s world revolves around music—and it’s clear that he’s got all bases covered.

His longevity and presence owes not only to the undeniable quality of Ricardo’s sets: his ability to meld the hypnotic, funky and raw into thumping, soul-shaking soundtracks but also to his constant drive to be at the forefront of global trends. His special gift for finding dance-floor diamonds has led to some of the most successful dance releases in South African music history. With a growing repertoire of highly-successful releases behind him— (nine to date and the tenth on the way) Ricardo has consistently brought his distinct flavour and contagious enthusiasm for House music to South Africa’s ever-evolving party scene.

Whenever South Africa plays host to an international talent— Ricardo is there, representing. He has held his own alongside some of the most legendary DJs and producers worldwide: Erick Morillo, Pete Tong, Deadmau5, Alex Kenji, Bass Kleph, Sasha, Paul van Dyk, Martin Solveig, Sandy Rivera, Junior Jack, Kid Creme, Tall Pall, Tiesto, Tom Novy, Axwell, PleasureKraft, Bingo Players, Dubfire, Sharam, Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Carl Cox and David Guetta— Ricardo’s been there, done that!

Chances are, if you’ve been anywhere near a dance-floor, you’ll have heard his name or heard his distinctive style of House. A quick rewind takes us to the nineties when young Ricardo was inspired and captured by the sounds of groups like 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, Cappello, Nightcrawlers, Culture Beat and the iconic band, Depeche Mode. A year or two later, Ricardo was seduced by the burgeoning house scene and his DJ career began to take root. In 1994, at Azurri Cafe, Ricardo’s skills first registered on the clubbing radar and he’s never looked back. Fifteen years later Ricardo has headlined at virtually every nightclub in South Africa, from Flyhouse, Bump, Tramps, DNA, Therapy, ESP, Nexus, Opium, 52 Parliament, Taboo, Origin, Trinity,Truth, Aruba Lounge, to Nicci Beach and many more.

Ricardo is no stranger to the sprawling madness of festivals either, rocking thousands at Urban Wave (David Guetta, Dubfire, Sharam), Kiss, Sound Factory, ICE, Woodstock, Fu-Cha Gathering and, of course, his long-standing residency at Africa’s biggest dance music festival, H20. It’s here that Ricardo has fuelled a massive 18,000 crowd with his magnetic blend of beats. When Ricardo Da Costa gets his groove on, he grabs your soul and won’t let go.

The demand for his skills has spread to neighbouring state Mozambique and has led to globe-trotting expeditions where he played at some of the world’s best international clubbing cities and festivals. 2004 saw Ricardo fly to Dubai where he rocked club Oxygen; in 2007 he hit Germany’s legendary Love Parade (1,2 million people) and this year his UK tour included gigs at Ministry of Sound, Hoxton Pony, Zulu Bar.

Episode 20 - Charl Chaka - LIVE - Burning Man '17 - Camp Shamal Episode 20 - Charl Chaka With music in his blood and funk in his soul, Charl’s raw energy & talent has taken him from top London clubs to festivals in South Africa, DJ residencies in Dubai to guest slots in Ibiza, Miami, London & back…

As a DJ, there is no questioning Charl’s ability behind the decks. Back in 2006 he won the Technics International DJ Competition, been voted #4 in the DJ Mag Middle East Poll of 2010 & Winner of ‘Best Local DJ’ in the TimeOut Nightlife Awards of 2012 alongside being nominated for ‘Best Local DJ’ in Ahlan, What’s On & Timeout Nightlife Awards in 2011, 2013 & 2014.

Charl is one of the original pioneers of the Dubai music industry, which is why in 2016 he was presented with the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ Award from HYPE Magazine for his impact & contribution in the Dubai Industry for over 12 years. He did book Cypress Hill for their first ever show in UAE after all! Charl is the Head Honcho of Dubai’s leading Nightlife & Music platform, Infusion Magazine. Infusion Magazine has been the authority on the UAE’s ever growing nightlife scene since 2005. Not only has Charl been directing the documenting of the city’s clubbing scene, he is part of history as the brainchild behind the award winning ‘Nasimi Beach Full Moon’ Parties, the event that has been quoted by TimeOut as “the event that changed the Dubai clubbing scene” to winning the TimeOut Nightlife Award for ‘Best Overall Event’ in 2010. Then there is GlobalFunk he ran with partner Ben McDonald, a Drum&Bass night and one of the longest standing events in this region to date. The list goes on…

Currently you can find him behind another 1st in Dubai, HOUSEofAFRIKA. Dubai’s only night dedicated the deepafro-house & being one of the 1st promoters to pioneer the likes of Black Coffee, Culoe De Song & Goldfish, HOUSEofAFRIKA has been nominated for best ‘House Night’ in TimeOut and Hype Nightlife Awards for 3 years in a row now! He has been instrumental in the annual South African Freedom Day and Heritage Day Celebrations, bringing SA artist to this region and getting the South African Community together to celebrate their Freedom and give them a “slice of home”

Not surprisingly he’s been featured in the Ahlan Top 100 List back in 2008 & currently and brand ambassador for PUMA, New Era & a official Pioneer DJ. A crowd pleasing DJ, Charl plays from the heart. His versatility has lead him to play warm ups for the biggest DJ’s and held his own at peak time slots! He is at ease playing in front of 15 000 people at Sandance or rock small intimate crowds at 360. One of the highlights of Charl’s career came in 2007, when he mixed a compilation CD for San Francisco based house heavyweights OM Records. OM:Dubai features 2 CD’s with world renowned DJ Andy Caldwell heading up CD 1 and our man from Dubai hosting CD 2. OM:Dubai is still a worldwide success selling over 12,000 copies worldwide and reached #4 on the iTunes most downloadable dance album charts! Charl’s interpretation of the Om sound in Dubai won him a wealth of critical acclaims…

“Its Charl’s mix, however, that wins top prize. Jacked to the max, this carries enough boompty-boomp to make Derrick Carter blush. It serves as a reminder that not all house has to be electronic or techno flavoured and that sometimes all you need is a classic walking bassline and a heavy kickdrum to get your groove on.” iDJ More recently you can catch his latest mix compilation courtesy of Heads&Tails Music on Beatport.

Charl has soared effortlessly into the international dance music scene, having shared the spotlight with legendary heavyweights such as Armand van Helden, Fatboy Slim, Derrick Carter, Kenny Dope, Todd Terry, Pete Tong and underground legends Mark Farina, DJ Heather, DJ Sneak & Dennis Ferrer.
